Be Part Of A New Cancer Study

Tina Castello and Rachel Lagarde don't know each other, but this morning they find themselves in the same room supporting one cause: cancer research.

“I thought it was an opportunity for me to do my part,” says Castello.

“I'm excited to think that I would play a part in something so major that could touch so many lives,” says Lagarde.

The two have lost loved ones to the disease and now they're doing their part in helping the American Cancer Society find a cure.

For the third time ever the organization is launching a nationwide research study. The first study linked tobacco use and cancer, the second found a link between obesity and cancer, this time Lynn Buggage with the American Cancer Society says, “We're taking a little bit of blood as well to see if we could learn some things about genetics and cancer prevention.”

The American Cancer Society hopes to enroll at least 300,000 people in the program. From now until Sunday you have the chance to help out if you’re between the ages of 30 to 65 years old, have never have been diagnosed with cancer, and are willing to make a 20 to 30 year commitment.

Initially you'd have your waist measured, take a survey and give a blood sample. Over the course of the next 20 to 30 years you'll be sent a survey, usually every other year.
