I guess we've all heard the statistic by now: NFL teams that start the season 0-2 have only a 12% chance of making the playoffs.
In case you've missed it, the 2012 Saints are 0-2. What's worse is how they got there. The Saints have no defense and Drew Brees is struggling, having trouble playing at his usual error-free, high level.
The last two weeks the Saints have given up 75 points and nearly 1000 yards of offense. They can't stop the pass or the run. And the only quarterback this Saints defense is putting pressure on, is on quarterback Drew Brees. The all-pro and Superbowl MVP isn't playing like one.
Brees is pressing. Trying to do too much. Brees knows he'll have to carry this team this year and it's a heavy load. No Sean Payton. No Carl Nicks. And no defense.
It's really quite simple. If the defense improves, the Saints can make a run at it. If the defense remains the same, the Saints won't make the playoffs.
0-2 is a terrible spot to be in. But all is not lost! In 1990, a Jim Mora coached Saints team started 0-2 and they made the playoffs. But, that team played defense. The 2012 Saints will have to learn how to do that and soon.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
