Former NBA player, head coach, and general manager Mike Dunleavy Sr. is leading an investment group interested in purchasing the Hornets from the NBA.
A source said the group includes investors in California and Louisiana. The source says Dunleavy is serving as a conduit between the group and the league. A potential local owner confirmed Tuesday to WGNO Sports that he was contacted and asked to be part of the purchasing group.
Dunleavy coached four NBA teams, including the Lakers to the Finals in 1991. He was the 1999 NBA coach of the year for the Portland Trailblazers.
A source said the league wants to name an owner and execute a new 10 year lease with the state of Louisiana before the March 15th trade deadline. The source said the NBA is tiring of having to sign off on player transactions and trades.
Former minority owner Gary Chouest could still be in the running for the team. And, a name that has surfaced as a potential owner is the Saints' Tom Benson. But, no one could confirm Benson's interest Tuesday.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
