Free served as director under Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

"I don't think that Mr Benson hired Mr Freeh as a patsy. Director Free is going to get to the bottom of this," said the former top man for the FBI in New Orleans, James Bernazzani.

Bernazzani says Freeh's team includes many former FBI agents. He says the investigation will be thorough and leave no stone unturned.

He says the investigation will be good for the city and fans as well as the team.

"Let's put this behind us. Let's get the Saints going again, and maybe they can win the Super Bowl."
