The Army Corps of Engineers won't have New Orleans as protected as it had hoped this hurricane season.

The Army Corps says interim protection measures will not be in place in the Industrial Canal, the vulnerable eastern flank of the city.

A $695 million corps contract awarded last year to The Shaw Group for construction of walls and gates required some protection by mid-August. But that interim protection cannot be completed until the 2010 hurricane season, according to corps senior project manager Ron Elmer.
