In tonight's medical watch -- a shot at clearing the skin for the summer. Why some are turning to botox!
Patient Julie Wolf says, "I've always had very oily skin since puberty."
Julie Wolf tried everything, acne treatments and makeup to cover the problem. It didn't.
Patient Julie Wolf, "Makeup doesn't stay on very well. It gets kind of cakey and clumpy during the day."
So she decided to try botox. the treatment has long been used to prevent wrinkles in the face.. Stopping people from expressions that crinkle the skin.
Dr. Shah, "For wrinkles it works for blocking the muscles. And for oil it works for blocking the sebaceous gland."
The gland that produces oil for the skin. When skin is dry it kicks into high gear...but in some people it overproduces oil, creating acne. Botox stops the process.
Dr. Shah, "What happens is the botox tells the gland, prevents this gland from making this oil."
There is a danger the botox will go into the underlying muscle.
Dr. Shah, "The problem with that is that you can have loss of movement in your face for four to six months. Now I've treated over 100 patients and never had a case of this. You have to be particularly pretty precise with your treatments."
With the proper application it hits the right spot in the right season... Pointing patients toward more clear skin.
Julie Wolf, "Less oily. My pores seemed a little more refined afterwards. A little bit less sweaty, kind of in the humid weather I don't have the constant shine or glare."

Dr. Shah, "This is kind of the classic patient that comes in for botox. And she's tried a variety of treatments. She's actually tried acutane in the past and nothing has proven to be affective. She's tried laser, chemical peels and nothing's worked."
And after botox.
Dr. Shah says, "She has a remarkable improvement in the amount of oil that is there. And this is three weeks after treatment."
