As the Democratic National Convention began its first full day of events in Charlotte, North Carolina,  Illinois delegates came out swinging against the GOP.

At a morning meeting of the Illinois delegation, U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky blasted republican U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh.  Schakowsky called Walsh, a Tea Party favorite, a disgrace to Congress and the republican party.

Walsh is facing Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth in the general election for the 8th Congressional district seat.

First Lady Michelle Obama is set to take the stage tonight. Mrs.  Obama practiced the keynote speech she’ll give tonight, during a rehearsal at Charlotte’s Time Warner Cable Arena yesterday. She'll be tasked with presenting her husband as a family man who puts fatherhood first.

The First Lady and Chicago native is headlining the first night of the DNC, where Illinois will have a prominent role.

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, Tammy Duckworth and Mayor Rahm Emanuel will also address the delegation tonight.
