It's Paczki Day. We do it every year.
New Orleans has Mardi Gras, but Chicago has its annual binge on Poland's famous deep-friend dough. Fat Tuesday is the day before Lent begins, which means thousands of people head to the bakeries to stuff up on sweets.
Last year, I hit Continental Bakery in Mount Prospect, where they put me to work in their paczki costume.
This year, we decided to sleep in a bit and take a Northwest Side Paczki Tour. First, I hit the Oak Mill Bakery location at 5753 W. Belmont. We finished at Delightful Pastries, 5927 W. Lawrence. Between all of Oak Mill's locations and Delightful Pastries, they'll be cranking out 100,000 paczki by the time the day is over.
My feature on Paczki Day 2012 will air on tonight's WGN News at Five. It will be posted here after the show. Have a favorite place for paczki? Let me know about it on Facebook or Twitter. I'll hit them next year!Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
