Charles 'Skip' Pitts, member of Isaac Hayes's band and creator of the iconic guitar riff in "Theme from Shaft," died of lung cancer in Memphis, May 1. He was 65 years old.
Pitts is resonsible for the unique "wah-wah" pedal sound featured in the 1970s Blaxploitation film "Shaft." The song was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971 and received an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Growing up in Washington D.C., Pitts spent his early life playing the guitar together with his neighbor and mentor Bo Diddley. Pitts joined Hayes's band in 1970, spending over 40 years with the group. Aside from his involvement with Hayes, Pitts was a session musician for Stax Record.
Pitts is survived by his wife Beverly.
