More than 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. But as much as 40% of the world’s oceans are heavily affected by human activities such as pollution, depleted fisheries and loss of coastal habitats. The goal by 2030 is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

Here at the confluence of the Okanogan and Columbia rivers, tens of thousands of sockeye and chinook salmon stage themselves every summer in an underwater base camp, waiting to make a final push to higher elevations in Canada and their cold-stream destiny: spawning.
