Airstrikes on Syrian town held by Islamic State kill 20 civilians, activists say
Syrian activists said Monday that airstrikes on a town held by the Islamic State group have killed at least 20 civilians.
It wasn’t clear who was behind the raid on Boukamal, near the border with Iraq, but various activist groups blame the U.S.-led coalition, which is waging war on Islamic State. The claims could not be independently verified.
Omar Abo Laila of the activist-run Deir Ezzor 24 said 15 homes in the town were destroyed in the raid. He said the victims were displaced civilians from the conflicts in Iraq and Syria.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the civilian death toll stood at 23 but is likely to rise.
Observatory director Rami Abdurrahman says Islamic State fighters were also killed.
