Helen McCain Smith is shown in Washington in this October 1969 file photo. Smith, First Lady Pat Nixon's press secretary during the Watergate scandal and President Nixon's resignation, died of vascular disease on Friday, April 9, 2004. She was 84. Those who dealt with Smith during the Watergate years said she balanced the needs of the media with the needs to preserve the privacy of President Nixon's family. After Nixon resigned, Smith worked briefly for First Lady Betty Ford, but remained in contact with the Nixon family. She left the White House later in 1974 and moved to London to work as an assistant to Elliot Richardson, then U.S. ambassador to England. In the early 1980s, she was a spokeswoman for Energy Secretary James Edwards before retiring.
