Hurricane Raymond, off Mexican coast, downgraded to Category 1

MEXICO CITY — Hurricane Raymond remained parked off the Mexican Pacific Coast on Tuesday, diminishing in power but slowly heading to a region still recovering from last month’s deadly tropical storm.

At 1 p.m. Tuesday, Raymond was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, according to Conagua, the Mexican national water commission. It had been classified as a Category 3 storm on Monday.

Officials said the storm’s movement was “erratic,” but that it was generally moving southeast toward the coast of Guerrero at a clip of less than 4 mph, with sustained winds of 93 mph and gusts of up to 112 mph.

Officials warned residents along the coast to remain alert despite the downgrade.

Guerrero was among the states seriously affected by Tropical Storm Manuel last month. The storm and a concurrent hurricane on Mexico’s Gulf Coast created a national catastrophe, killing at least 139 people and causing millions of dollars in damage.
