Bronx (New York City)Fordham

Five members of a Bronx family -- including a 3-month-old boy - are in the hospital following a fire that broke out early Saturday morning in the kitchen of their Fordham Heights apartment.

It happened around 3:15 a.m.

According to police and eyewitness reports, a neighbor helped the 22-year-old mother and her baby to escape the building at 50 East 191 Street. Firefighters had to pull the 28-year-old father and the couple's baby girls, ages 2 and 3, out of a sixth-floor window.

Emergency crews rushed the family to Jacobi Medical Center, where doctors list them in critical condition. The mother and baby boy are in stable condition.

The mother told a neighbor that she woke up to a smoke-filled kitchen before waking up her husband. He gave the baby to her and hustled them out of the apartment, but he and the little girls were trapped and had to be rescued by firefighters.

Eyewitnesses say it looked like the father was burned badly.

Investigators are trying to pinpoint the exact cause of the two-alarm fire.
