A massive 4-alarm fire in Bay Ridge leaves two homes badly damaged but spared the lives of everyone inside.
According to fire officials, the blaze started just before 3:30 a.m. at 168 81st Street and quickly spread to the adjoining home at 170 81st Street. A neighboring home received smoke damage.
With the threat of a building collapse, firefighters were forced to fight the fire from the outside.
The extreme heat played a role in the blaze as firefighters continued to stay hydrated to prevent heat exhaustion.
Humidity was also an issue as the smoke was not able to rise as rapidly, making breathing conditions more difficult.
Although no civilians were injured, a few firefighters did suffer minor injuries.
No word on how the fire started.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
