The summer of senseless shootings continues after two men were killed in shooting near the corner of Georgia and Dumont Avenues in East New York, police said.
According to authorities, the shooting happened at about 12: 40 a.m. Wednesday. 28-year-old Mario Mejia and 24-year old Leonardo Saravia, who are reportedly cousins, were shot outside a home located at 456 Georgia Ave. Police say Mejia was shot in the head and died at the scene.
Witnesses say EMS workers were pumping Saravia's chest as they wheeled him to an ambulance. Shot in the legs, he was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital. His cousin Araceli Nunez told PIX 11 she drove to the scene from the Bronx after getting the tragic news.
"All I know is no one has the right to take anybody's life, and something has to be done about the extreme gun violence." she went on to say, "We're losing our children. We're losing our relatives. This is not right. No one should go through this pain," she said.
So far, police say they have no suspects or motives. Saravia's cousin blames guns.
"Leonardo was loving, caring, very respectful. I'm going to miss him dearly. Something has to be done about the availability of guns on the street," she said.
No arrests have been made in the shooting as police continue to investigate.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
