1 Killed, 2 Critical After Columbia University Construction Site Collapse

A tragic construction site collapse has left one construction worker dead and two others injured in Morningside Heights, officials said.

According to authorities, the collapse happened at a building at the intersection of Broadway and West 131st Street, at about 8 a.m. Thursday.

The site is reportedly part of an ongoing expansion of Columbia University and construction workers were taking part in a demolition at the time of the collapse.

Steel, bricks and concrete rained down on the workers after a beam that was supporting the main structure was cut. Investigators are trying to determine if human error is to blame for the incident.

After firefighters sift through the rubble, they were able to locate and pull the construction workers out of the debris. The injured were transported to St. Luke's Hospital where one man was pronounced dead and two others continue to cling to life.

Officials said one survivor is listed in critical condition while the other is listed in serious.

Police were still at the scene Thursday afternoon investigating the fatal accident.
