Dead Dog Found Floating In LI Sound In Cooler

Authorities on Long Island are investigating after a dead dog was found floating in a cooler in the Long Island Sound.

According to officials, the blue soft sided cooler was found floating in the water by a patrolling Smithtown Bay Constable boat on Thursday at about 6:10 p.m.

The cooler was discovered approximately ¼ mile west of Cranes Neck and north of Sunken Meadow State Park, authorities said.

Upon opening the cooler, a dead pitbull was discovered inside. It was transported to the Smithtown town dock, Nissequogue location by the Bay Constables and the Suffolk County SPCA was called for assistance.

The cooler had no markings showing signs of ownership. The pit bull is described brown, approximately 2 to 3 years of age and weighed about 40 pounds.

There was no visible trauma or scarring on the dog. Also found in the cooler with the dog was a blue nylon leash but there was no collar or tags.
