Man Under Arrest In East Village Rape Attempt

East Village (Manhattan, New York)

Police arrested the man they believe was caught on clear, full-color surveillance footage attacking a woman in the East Village and attempting to rape her.

Officers are questioning a Brooklyn man, 35-year-old Imre Meszesan, and have charged him with attempted rape and burglary.

According to detectives, the suspect followed the victim into her apartment building early Sunday morning. Once inside, he ambushed her, threw her to the ground and tried to rape her.

The victim managed to fight the man off. He fled the scene.

PIX 11 went to the building where the assault happened, on First Avenue off East 12th Street, and spoke to long-time, East Village resident, Barbara Frustaci.

"There's a lot of young women in the neighborhood--college students--" said Frustaci, "and you see those kinds of people lurking around."
