Police in Nassau County are on the hunt for a driver who struck and injured a young New Cassel girl while she was playing.
Cricea Castenada, 7, was standing near the intersection of Grand Street and Monitor Street - not far from her home - on June 24 when a speeding vehicle jumped the curb, hit her and sped off. The young girl sustained a skull fracture and a broken leg from the accident. The victim, who was treated at Nassau County Medical Center, is said to be in stable condition.
Her mother, Sonia Maribel Castaneda, heard the accident while she was inside her home.
"It sounded like something exploded," she said at a news conference outside the hospital.
When she went outside, she saw neighbors pulling her daughter out from underneath a parked car, where she had been thrown.
Castaneda immigrated to the United States from El Salvador 12 years ago. She and her husband also have a 10-year-old son.
Anyone with information about the hit and run crash is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
