New Nike Sneaker Inspired By Jones Beach

Long Island footwear fanatics, listen up. A limited-edition Nike sneaker inspired by our very own Jones Beach comes out Friday. We're talking very limited - as in 516 pairs. (Get it? Area code 516?)

It's a variation on the Air Force 1, the basketball shoe introduced in 1982 that over the years has become a big collector's item.

So what's so Long Island-y about the new shoe?

First off, it's tan and baby blue to reflect the beach and sea. It's made of a grainy canvas with an embossed design to signify sand and beach grass. The tongue tab is marked with a silhouette of the historic water tower, the longitude and latitude of Jones Beach is stamped on the back of the shoe, and the words "Strong Island" appear inside the left shoe. And on the soles, there's a map of our island.

"There's no doubt they're going to be collector's items," says Richard Leggio, the owner of Street Gear in Hempstead, a Nike retailer on the Island, where the phone is already ringing off the hook. For now, the price on the box is $120, but likely, there will be some significant eBay action.
