Man Charged With DWI After Mowing Down Couple, Killing 1

A Long Island man was arrested and charged with DWI after police say he struck two pedestrians, killing one of them in North Amityville.

According to Suffolk County Police, Richard Hughes, 49, of East Islip was driving a 2002 Lincoln Continental along Route 110 at around 5:56 a.m. when his vehicle struck two pedestrians near Ritter Avenue.

The female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene while the other victim, a man, was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he is listed in critical condition.

The identities of the victims weren't immediately released.

Hughes, who stayed at the scene until police arrived, was charged with driving while intoxicated. He is expected to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Tuesday.
