A Brooklyn man attacked a police officer as he tried to escape his arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead, Nassau County police announced Tuesday.
Kenneth D. Edward, 20, was reportedly about to be arraigned on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, among other traffic violations, when he attempted to flee the courthouse around 3:15 p.m.
According to a report, Edward was headed straight out the main courtroom doors when he tried to push past one officer who was blocking his way. Edward then reportedly hit the officer in the face and drove him into wall.
The 20-year-old was restrained by several officers. The officer who was injured was rushed to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola -- where he was treated for back pain.
Edward reportedly faces additional charges of second-degree assault, resisting arrest and third-degree escape. He is scheduled for arraignment TuesdayCopyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
