MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (PIX11) -- An early morning fire killed a married couple living in an illegally converted gargage apartment at 23 Nancy Lace in East Massapequa.

According to Fire Chief, Peter Anglim, the bodies of  54-year-old Gary Munsch and 51-year-old Toni Munsch were found inside the apartment, just steps away from the front door.

The home had no working smoke detectors, according to fire officials.

The owner, who was home at the time, is believed to be Munsch's brother and was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for minor burn injuries.

Officials say the owner never obtained a permit to add the kitchen in the garbage and was cited for building code violations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
