Police arrived to the LIRR station in Queens Wednesday to find that an MTA officer had been stabbed and the suspect was found shot dead at the scene, according to MTA officials and police.
The suspect, unprovoked, attacked Officer John Barnett by pulling a knife out and stabbing the him around at 9:32 a.m at Sutphin Blvd. between tracks two and three. The suspect was subsequently shot dead by the stabbed officer. Both men were rushed to Jamaica Hospital. No other officers were involved.
The incident was the first time the 45-year-old Barnett ever had to fire his weapon after working for the MTA police for 10 years, He is currently underwent a CAT scan at Jamaica Hospital, and he is conscious and is expected to be okay.
The suspect, 46-year-old Edgar Owens, has a record of taunting officers in the past.
