The investigation into the killing of a Brooklyn mom on the eve of her wedding has taken a strange turn as a result of a bloody note found at the scene. The note has investigators trying to figure out what it means and why 38-year-old Vindalee Smith was stabbed and slashed to death Saturday.
Smith died just one day before her wedding and two weeks before giving birth to her fifth child. The unborn child did not survive. Now police are faced with a strange twist as they hunt for her killer.
The bloody note was found under the dead woman's body. The letter which is a computer printout says a pregnant woman will die each month unless authorities release Lee Boyd Malvo the Washington D.C. sniper. It's signed "The Apprentice" and has a smiley face according to published reports.
Malvo is serving life in prison for his role in the Beltway murders 10 years ago. He recently gave a jailhouse interview. His accomplice John Allen Muhammad was executed three years ago and had talked of killing a pregnant woman if he had not been caught.
Retired forensic investigator Dan Austin has a few theories about killer. " One of them being this is a ruse to throw people off. He also told PIX11 " It could be some kind of religious aspect to it."
Cops have questioned the woman's finance 33-year-old Anthony Jackman who turns out to be already married but he has not been arrested. In the meantime Forensic Psychologist N.G. Burrell says there is reason to be concerned about the threat. " I think it should be taken seriously. A murder has taken place." He went on to say, "That's irrefutable."
The investigation is continuing.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
