One Dead After Severe Storm Rips Through NYC

Fire officials say one person died after a tree fell on a car in Queens during a fast-moving afternoon storm.

Iline Levaskis, 30, of Mechanicsburg, Pa. died when a tree fell on her 2010 Lexus sedan at 6:50 p.m. Her 60-year-old husband Bill suffered minor injuries.

She had just pulled over to the shoulder of the Grand Central Parkway. Reports say she switched seats with her husband and they were intending on waiting out the storm.

The storm brought down trees and power lines and tore off rooftops in one Brooklyn neighborhood.

Numerous minor injuries have also been reported.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for Staten Island and Brooklyn. The warning was in effect until 6 p.m.

Brooklyn resident Steven Harris says seven or eight rooftops blew off on his street. He says trees fell and knocked down power lines.

In the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, witnesses say the sky went pitch black at about 5:30 p.m. Trees started waving around like blades of grass. Large branches snapped and hit cars, smashing windshields.
