Police were called to a senior center in Merrick Wednesday morning to find two dogs viciously attacking an elderly woman.

The dogs, described as "Pit bull-type dogs"-- one grey and the other tan with a white stomach -- attacked the 62-year-old woman in the corner of a parking lot at 1260 Meadowbrook Rd. around 11 a.m., according to police.

When police approached, both dogs turned on the officers, who shot at the canines, striking one. The shots scared off the dogs that then ran from the scene into a field behind a school. According to police, that is where the grey dog died of bullet wounds, but the other dog has still not been located.

The animals left the woman with bruises and lacerations to her head and face, and deep, serious lacerations to her left arm and both legs, according to officials. She is being treated at the Nassau University Medical Center.

The Nassau County Police Department is asking all residents in the area to stay inside their homes while they try to locate the second dog.
