The bridge formerly known as the “Queensboro” will now be called the “Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge” the City Council decided Wednesday.
The measure, proposed by Mayor Bloomberg, passed with a 38 to 12 vote.
The cost of updating the Queensboro Bridge signs will reportedly be funded with private donations.
Bloomberg proposed that the bridge to be renamed for Koch’s 86th birthday last December.
Giving the bridge a new title did not come without opposition. Queens council members said their constituents felt the bridge was fine and didn't need a new name.Ed Koch said he was elated with the news and that it is now up to the media to get his name to stick.
Koch oversaw an era of building and infrastructure investment despite a nationwide economic crisis that hit New York city exceptionally hard.
