Police have arrested a man who confessed to fatally stabbing his roommate, and fleeing to Vermont.
Justin Waller, 30, agreed to meet with investigators at a police station in Manchester, Vt. Friday, after authorities discovered he was staying at a friend's apartment there.
Police had been searching for Waller since Thursday, when his roommate, John S. Lea, was found with his throat slashed, lying under a mound of clothes on the floor of his apartment in Hell's Kitchen.
Lea, 41, worked as an event planner with the New York Society of Security Analysts. He and Waller had been living together for the past several weeks, but had begun arguing over their living arrangement, police said.
Investigators believe Lea wanted Waller to move out after he failed to pay rent, but Waller refused, police said.
Lea was found with several defense wounds on his hands, indicating the two had been in a struggle. A knife was also found at the scene.
Investigators later discovered Waller had spent a few hundred dollars on one of Lea's credit cards to hire a car to drive him to Vermont, police said. Authorities also said Waller rang up a handful of other charges to buy groceries and other items of that nature.
Waller is being held at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility in Rutland, Vt., on $500,000 bail.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
