A small plane that took off from a Northern New Jersey airport crashed nose down into a stream Tuesday morning, a spokesperson from the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The plane's pilot John Murray, 61, of Rockaway Township and his passenger Bill Fischer, 57, of Vernon were injured in the crash. The two men, whose injuries were not immediately known, were transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital.

According to the FAA, the single-engine Cessna 150 crashed in a heavily wooded area, seconds after it took off from Sussex County Airport. The initial report of the plane going down was received just before 8:30 a.m., officials said.

The accident is under investigation.
