A 14-year-old boy died Tuesday after being pulled from rough waters off of Far Rockaway, officials said.
Akeem Craig, of Queens, was swimming in the water near Beach 19 Street and Seagirt Blvd. at around 12:30 p.m. with another 14-year-old. The boys were reportedly trying to swim to a buoy in the waters where no lifeguard was on duty.
At some point the pair separated when Craig's friend realized he couldn't make it and turned back. He had trouble staying above water but a passerby managed to pull him to safety; by the time he made it to the beach he could no longer see his friend.
After a 40-minute search, divers finally located Craig, who was taken by paramedics to St. John's hospital in cardiac arrest.
He was later pronounced dead at St. John's Hospital.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
