Gov.-elect Tom Corbett is tapping a coal company founder and prominent GOP fundraiser from central

Pennsylvania to head the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

Corbett's transition team said Thursday that Alan Walker of Bradford Energy Company will head the agency responsible for numerous community and business aid programs.

Walker, of Clearfield County, is Corbett's first cabinet appointee.

The 66-year-old Walker is a member and past chairman of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and the Pennsylvania Coal Association.

Corbett says Walker "has an outstanding record of giving back to his state and to his community."

Corbett, the state's Republican attorney general, will be sworn in Jan. 18. Walker faces a Senate confirmation vote after that.

The department's budget is about $325 million this year.
