The First Round of Idol Eliminations

Tonight's results round came with two eliminations and a new twist added to the show.  The judges will have a one-time-only opportunity to save a contestant from being eliminated until the top five finalists are selected. If the panel unanimously agrees, no singers will be eliminated that week, but two contestants will be sent packing the next week.  After that there were performances by Kanye West and the first American Idol Kelly Clarkson.  In the end two were sent packing; Jorge Nunez and Jasmine Murray.  Here are Daphne and Julie with their thoughts on the night.

DAPHNE:  Well first, I am not sure about the judges save.  I know they are going to reserve that save for "Golden Boy Gokey", "Lousy Lambert" or the "Ever Lovely Lil".  So why not just announce that those three don't even have to sing anymore and just say top three whether America likes it or not.  But this is somewhat close to what I was thinking it would be.  I figured that the Judges would have "veto power" and could just overturn the results if they wanted to.  I like the one time save better.  And thank God it isn't a "sing for your survival" scenario that everyone else was predicting.  I didn't really dig that idea.  Anyway, on to the rest of the show.  I really wish the group number was Michael and Janet's song Scream.  I think that would fit the contestants well.  But it still would have been lame, just like the Ford music Video.  By the way, why do people still think that using "We Will Rock You" by Queen is a good idea?  Most overused song in HISTORY!  Kanye West came on the show to prove you don't have to be a good singer to have a number one hit, and make loads of money.  It is also funny that his performance was pre-taped.  It would have been just as bad if it were live, Kanye.  Kelly Clarkson, as always, was so AWESOME!  I love her!  As for the results.  I am glad I got one right of my "wish castoffs".  Like I said yesterday, I wanted to see Sarver and Jasmine go...and despite thinking Jasmine is a pretty girl with loads of talent, she just isn't ready for this.  As for Jorge, I would have rather seen Sarver get the boot.  I am glad Anoop is still around.  But it is a bittersweet moment to know that I was right about Jorge.  He was starting to grow on me.  I'll miss him.

JULIE:  The first Idol results show had two contestants heading home. Looks like Daphne and I each got one of them right. I called Jorge and Matt and Jorge was the one sent packing.  I did say that Jasmine was in danger -I just figured her performance was good enough to hold on another week, and besides I thought with so few girls she had a better shot at staying.  I've decided I'm ok with the judge save for the season. I was talking to Daphne yesterday and she heard the rumor the bottom two would sing for their lives each night -which I wouldn't have liked. I suggested they might do one of these save type situations -but with each judge getting only one for the season. I'm glad they made it only one for the entire season, that way it doesn't mess with America's vote, it just gives one person a leg up one time.  As for the group song and dance -I've never been a fan of these things, especially at the beginning of the season when they're trying to fit so many parts into the song.  Admittedly I'm not a Kanye West fan to begin with, I'm sure I couldn't identify any of his songs...so it's not like I was looking forward to his performance. It was ok, and the fans seemed to love it -but it was just 'eh to me.  Is it just me, or is it really ironic for Kelly Clarkson to sing "My Life Would Suck Without You" on Idol? Because seriously without Idol where would she be? I liked the song though it was fun and catchy.
