Tonight was the second round of competing for a spot in the top twelve. It was a night full of laughs, bad notes, and some great performances. Here are our Idol Experts with their thoughts on the night.
Welcome back Idol fans!
We are back for another night of craziness.
Dancer X wants to start now.
First up we had Jasmine Murray who sang "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles. As a huge fan of Sara Bareilles, I say Jasmine killed the song. She tried to do way to much to it. She started out way way too low...and then she kept hitting some nasty notes. This song isn't a complicated song, and she tried to make it complicated. Her voice is not even close to being pretty enough to sing anything by Bareilles, ever.
I was kinda surprised to hear her sing this song. It's a cute pop song, but not right for her -she did make it a big more dramatic then was called for. I liked her attitude and there were some good parts, but she might not be ready for the big stage yet.
Everyone loved this girl during the auditions, but now she's coming off as a blank slate. Bad start, creepy onstage, it's over for this early favorite.
Immediately disappointing. Wow. I thought she'd be around for a while, but I don't think that was anywhere near okay. And she is trying too hard anyway. Correct me if I'm wrong, but she wasn't in tune at all. Bad song choice? I don't know. Dogg! Not even Paula liked you! And was it me or did the crowd's booing came much later than usual, like it was obligatory or something.
Matt Giraud hits the stage next and he is singing Coldplay. Ugh...Coldplay is so over played on the radio, I don't want him to sing this song. I think he did a good job Hollywood week. And I am not sure about tonight. He wasn't horrible, but not even close to great. When he tried to do the runs, he sounded horrible...plus that song doesn't need runs like that. And his voice sounded shaky the entire way through it. I think he is a guy who needs to stay behind the piano. I think Simon Cowell nailed it, it sounded like a wannabe pop star, but he is much better with the blues.
He sounded nervous and out of breath, and I def heard some pitch problems. I really wish we got to see him with his piano -I think that would have made him more comfortable. Again with the wrong song choice too.
Matt actually got worse as the song went on. Dancer X doesn't even know what song this is.
Ok...setting me up for some more disappointment. Piano guy = awesome. And I'm a fan of Coldplay, so I don't think this will go well. And it doesn't. His nerves are wrecking this. You can hear his voice shaking all over the place. That was terrible. Guh.
And why the are the judges sitting in a different order tonight? Annoying. Simon should always go last, not Randy. Dogg.
Jeanine Vailes sang "This Love" by Maroon 5. Wow weird. That was so wrong. I did not like that at all. Why would you sing THAT song with THAT voice. I actually like "This Love" but seriously like that?? I liked Paula's comment "nice legs" because that's all you could say after that.
Maroon 5...well, there is no accounting for taste, I guess...I am surprised that so far the contestants are picking recent songs. As for this chick...better than Jasmine and Matt, but not anywhere near great. I wouldn't vote for her...Like Paula I am not sure I can say much. It just wasn't good...but hey if I have to choose between her and the other two, I am choosing her.
Bahaha! She tripped in the video. And then she fell flat in her performance. Dude! What is up with this night being so, so, sooo bad?!? Terrible song choice again. Nice stems, though. I predict a smattering of "you look good" comments, especially from Paula. Aaaaand there they are. Score one for Artie. And WOW! I love Kara for saying she doesn't deserve a shot! HOT!
Awful. Complete amateur hour. Dancer X would reveal the last time Dancer X heard that kind of performance, but it would involve admitting to spending substantial amounts of time in college radio stations when sophomore DJs think they can scrap the playlist and invite their friends to pop by the station, BYOB. Also Dancer X thinks she has that X-Files eyeball problem. It is all to easy to say that America will never see Jeanine Vailes again after this week's results show.
Now is the time for Nick Mitchell...wait Norman Gentle. BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!!!! First of all, let's be honest, he blew the other three away. He was way better!!! And the he called out Neil Patrick Harris who is BACK IN THE AUDIENCE AGAIN!!! What? I honestly love this guy though. I want to see him go on. I think this contest needs him. In fact, if he goes through, my love for Idol may return...because ever since David Cook, I have been a little put off by this show. Norman Gentle is the best way to renew my love for it. Make it happen America! I wish I would have recorded that, I would love to watch that again....and again.
You know, Dancer X was originally not a fan of Senor Gentle. It seemed like he was showing up to mock the competition, not to truly participate. But in this performance, Nick Norman Mitchell Gentle made Dancer X a believer. As Paula said, singers come in all shapes and sizes and genres and then she started babbling. If we are to accept R&B, country, rock and folk singers all living in the same reality show box, why not a comic artist? Granted, the truly successful comic singer is a rare bird. We do not have airwaves full of Weird Al analogues. We have pretty much the one Weird Al. Dancer X is with you, Daphne. This guy would be hell on wheels to watch murder genre after genre week after week. Dancer X would just hope that he has more in him than this aggro-gay stereotype.
OHMIGOD!! I LOVED IT!! How could you not vote for Nick/Norman after that?! That was fantastic! It was highly entertaining, this is the best twist for this season, and I'm on board as long as he is! How much do you wanna bet this guy gets a vegas gig after this? ...in a drag show of course.
Going in, I have a major hate-on for this guy. That performance at least made me hate him a little less. I think the guy did pretty well, considering the competition so far tonight. He has guts, sticking to his character like this. And he made a really good point that may have won me over, dude. He's not going to be the next Justin Timberlake, but, given the chance, he might be able to be the next Andy Samberg, Adam Sandler, Jack Black or Weird Al. He really showed us what kind of 'artist' he wants to be. Don't get me wrong, he has yet to prove to me that he can sing as well as any of those schlubs, but tonight may have changed my opinion of him in general. Also, if he had performed last week, he'd be sunk because that vocal wasn't interesting enough nor strong enough to beat Golden Boy Gokey or Dark Horse Pink Hair Grace. That being said, best performance of the night...so far.... And kudos for enduring that terrible judge/Seacrest banter.
Allison Iraheta next.
*WATCHES PRE-SONG INTERVIEW*
Who is this horrible, horrible young lady? What was that nasty biker nurse from last season? Is this her again?
Oh my, she actually sang that. Dancer X is surprised. Dancer X wanted to slap this cherub while she was making like a sixteen year old Jack Tripper with Seacrest. But then she flowered on stage. Does Idol offer an award for Best Voiceover Artist? Because Dancer X would like to never see this child again, but perhaps wouldn't mind hearing her.
I didn't like the beginning, but then she just exploded (in a good way) I mean there were a couple times she was just yelling. But she really showed emotion and that she had a lot of talent. She is so awkward when she's talking though.
Okay, the youngest girl is busting out the oldest song of the night so far. This girl has talent. Anyone who can pull off a song originally sung by the Great Ann Wilson has talent. She had a couple rough notes, but they were easily overlooked. She has a lot of talent for such a young girl. I like her. Plus she has a great stage presence. And I like the raspiness in her voice.
Heart. Big shoes to fill, little one. You better do it up...
And she did! That was the best vocal of the night so far! Raw energy, and in tune! Weird little finger on the mic thing, but who cares? A decent vocal! Yay! And it didn't feel like she was trying too hard or anything like that... It's like she actually has talent. I don't know how far she'll go in the Top 12 if she makes it in, but I think she deserves to get there, at least.
Kris Allen sang a Michael Jackson song, "Man In the Mirror". He was alright, he's a cute guy and he can sing, but I wasn't impressed. I agreed with Kara the first half was 'eh but the second half was much better. He honestly didn't really hold my attention with that song though -kinda forgettable.
Uh oh...Michael Jackson song. These kids are not picking good songs tonight. And Michael Jackson songs normally don't work out so well. The chorus was much better than the verse. I pictured this being way worse than what it was. But, it still wasn't fantastic. MJ songs are really hard, because most people don't have the personality to sing it. To be completely honest, I'd rather have Norman Gentle in the top 12, but if I get this guy instead, I'm okay with that...at least I'd have something good to look at then.
Dude! NO! Do NOT pick a Michael Jackson song, you stupid, stupid people. Do you have a deathwish? And this is a boring song, too. That said, he did pretty well. The first "ooo" scared me, but the rest was pretty good.
Again. Never let Randy go last.
Does anyone ever deliver a Jacko song? They should start pulling his songs from the availability catalog. Poor Kris was barely there for the first part, but he finished up strong. Dancer X quite enjoyed his peppy, jazzy style at the end. He seemed genuine, young and confident... when a lot of these singers already want to come off like twenty year vets of the recording industry. Dancer X is going to support fun this year, not so much the big overdramatic weepers. But like a lot of clean-cut Idol contestants, he is pretty much instantly forgettable. Where's Luke Menard these days?
Megan Corkrey: a conundrum. I dig her. She's cute. She's quirky on-stage. She has a decent voice. But I'm not sure that her voice is good enough to go through. That was simultaneously a good and bad song choice. It was good because it told us what she wants to do, but bad because the lower register stuff was dodgy. Interesting performance. It'll be interesting to see how this works out for her.
Really? Dancer X did not get this at all. Instantly, one could sense the smoky, indie girl vibe, but whatever. That's a one trick pony voice. Even if she gets through, she'll never live through the first theme week.
What was with that silly sashay dance? This girl is nuts.
I like her. She is different from the others in this competition. I like her style, and she has a cool voice. The one thing I wasn't thrilled with was her dancing behind the mic there. But beyond that I think she did a good job.
I liked this girl too. She's fun and she's different. Corkrey is quirky and I'm into it. She had a couple parts of the song that she was over singing, but there were a lot of parts that were sweet and I would def want to hear her again.
Matt Breitzke is up next singing Tonic. Before he even sings I am thinking "we already have Sarver, do we need this guy too?" The answer is no. While he had a good song choice, and he sang it decently, he doesn't blow me away.. He didn't really rock that song the way it should be rocked. Plus he doesn't have that "I'm a super nice and normal guy" vibe that Sarver had to win the votes. And what is with the attitude all these people are getting with Simon "I disagree"...well, pal nobody cares what you think about yourself. What matters is what we think, and I am thinking I agree with Simon.
Hmm the rough neck got in...can the welder make it as well?? Some how I doubt it. He didn't do a bad job singing, it just seemed very karaoke. He should just stick to the bar singing, that's where he fits. The song wasn't right, and he was boring.
Has anyone else noticed how different Kara looks without the eye shadow? It's very strange. She almost looks like a walking airbrush.
And what is up with Randy using "cool" to mean "lame" tonight?
Oh, did someone just sing?
That was Bill Brasky does karaoke on Thursday night at the local dive bar. The vocal was alright, but not a good song choice. Wow--and for once, Paula makes a relevant, succinct thought. That is all I have for this guy.
Jesse Langseth sang "Bette Davis Eyes". I liked her singing that song, but I agree with Randy -she needed a bigger song to showcase her voice better. It fit well with her voice and style, but she needed to impress America tonight and I'm not sure if America will vote for this.
I'm torn on this chick. She was okay. Better than the last guy, but not better than the young awkward chick with red hair. And her look is...not appealing to me for some reason. I don't think she'll make it through, based on her forgettable performance.
Uh oh. A terrible start. "Bette Davis Eyes" is already a gimmicky song to begin with, and Jesse amped up the schtick. And then arguing with the judges? And kissing the song's ass? This girl is already playing the game, and that annoys Dancer X.
I have to say Jesse is definitely the coolest looking chick in this. There is just something about her look that is just awesome. She was another one who I think did a good job, but she didn't blow me away...and I really wanted her to. Randy was dead on with his critique. I like Jesse in a way that I would totally dig hanging out with her, go to the bar and listen to her sing there...but I don't know if she can do the Idol thing.
Kai Kalama I like this guy's feel, pre-performance. Sideshow Guy Next Door. But this was another forgettable performance. Boring song choice. I think I'd like to hang out with this guy, but I don't think I'd buy his album. Sorry, bro. NEXT!
Never. Let. Randy. Go. Last.
I like Kai, and I think he's got a great voice. I do wish he sang a song that was a bit more current though. Kai is such a likeable guy with such a sweet voice. He did well in his performance too.
I am not a fan of this guy. He has a really nice voice, but everything else kind of bothers me. We all know he is a good guy, with the way he treats his mom and all, but that won't win me over. I admit, he's got skills, but I am just not a fan. He is kind of boring.
Cheesy performance, great voice. Dancer X thinks anyone who is allowed to pantomime words to the song, as when Kai put his hands together on the word "pray," should be tripped as they walk offstage. Tripped into a wall. Great voice though. Just needs to be himself rather than a parody of a lounge singer.
And get a haircut, hippie.
Before Mishavonna Henson started singing, I was kind of wishing I could fast foward through her performance. Well, glad I couldn't. She wasn't bad. I really like her voice. Once again, I don't see star power, but I do like her voice. I'd like to hear more from her, but I don't think she did enough tonight to get another shot. She was a little boring. But I dig that voice.
Dancer X liked this one. She had the rare mix - rare to tonight, anyway - of someone who can sing and is not incredibly annoying when they are not singing. She was only moderately annoying, and then only during the post-song bit with Seacrest. By this point, Dancer X will accept moderately annoying.
Mishavonna? Really? What kind of name is that? Seriously? I give it 2 weeks until she drops the -vonna. Does nobody know how to choose songs tonight? I think it was a good, solid performance, if not a little safe. I'd like to see her make it to the next round, based on what we just saw. Good stuff, just bad song choice. And I thought that was a weird criticism. "Too old"? Really? Plus, I think she looks like she could be Luis Guzman's (from the movie "Waiting") daughter.
I love "Drops of Jupiter" and she sang it really well. Yeah she could have sang a different song, but I liked it. It might not have been the most impressive performance though. It was a good performance, maybe just not as memorable as it could have been.
Adam Lambert, a long lost Jonas Brother! This guy is just absurd. He's showing off. It's weird. He is clearly a trained singer, but his show was overcooked. Randy chalked that up to a Mick impersonation, but why should that grant him a pass for looking ridiculous. Still, he is the best male singer of the group, Dancer X doesn't think that's even debateable. He's going to be fabulous as Prince Charming in future DisneyWorld park stage shows.
Whoa he really rocked it out! I was not expected that from Mr. Theater, but I guess I should have. He really put on a show, and it wasn't too much either it was just right. He's acting like a rock star already. His look and feel is perfect for this show right now.
I do not like this guy, at all. He's prances around the stage like a male version of Cher, and he's just missing the bird costumes...which I wouldn't put past him to wear. Mick and Keith should sue this kid for ruining their song. This guy is this season's David Cook. He is horrible, and thinks that he is way better than he is, probably due partly to Paula drooling over him. I'll take Nick Mitchell, thanks. Unfortunately all the David Cook fans out there are going to eat this guy and his horrible performance up. He's over rated and just stands on stage sticks out his tongue (which I am pretty sure he ripped off of Kiss) and screams high pitched into the microphone. He is not original, and he is not good. This kid needs to go back to the Theatre circuit.
I totally have to go with Simon on this Adam kid. First off, he needs a haircut. He looks like Ramiele from last season, except she pulled it off and made it hot. Secondly, ok, I have to admit the screams were pretty well-placed and not horrible. And his song choice was decent because it gave him license to go all over the place with his performance. He went from opening it up with a sultry Broadway feel to screaming in tune like Steven Tyler to karaoke moments in the middle. All that good stuff being said, I don't like this kid. Just feels like another David Cook character: people are going to love him or hate him. I liked the screams, but there were WAY too many of them. Like he was showing off, which I hate. He may have talent, but I don't want to see it. I know he'll make it through, but I personally hope that Gokey impales him with modesty and likeability when they face off.
OK here are my picks for the night... Nick/Norman with the top male votes -and i'll honestly be surprised if he doesn't make it. Allison Iraheta gets the top girl votes. Adam Lambert may be able to slide by with the third vote, but I only think he'll get it because there wasn't that many good people tonight. Finally Megan Corkrey could end up a wild card pick.
Who I'd like to see go on: Nick Mitchell, Allison Iraheta, and Megan Corkrey. Who I think will go on: Allison Iraheta, Megan Corkrey, and Adam Lambert
Adam, Mishavonna, and how about Kris? But really, there were a lot of similar performances tonight. Dancer X doesn't think that anybody really ran away with the votes like Gokey did last week.
Dancer X would love to see Nick get through, but it just does not seem like it would happen.
My prediction is: Allison, Adam, Nick. Allison because she's different and I like her. Nick because he did his thing and America might be on his side now. And Lambert because it's inevitable. And if Nick doesn't make it, I'll put Megan through.
