Baker bio: Kerlin, who is retired from an engineering firm where she worked in administration, says her recipe originated with her late mother. But like so much of Kerlin's baking, it's been tinkered with over the years. "I added the coffee cream topping to it," she says. "I had used that on other desserts." Known just as much for her presentation as her cooking, Christmas is her favorite holiday, when she bakes tins of cookies to give to friends and relatives.
