KILLINGLY, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut state police say a former Killingly school secretary has admitted stealing thousands of dollars from a student activity fund to pay her mortgage and other bills.

Fifty-four-year-old Cathy Flerra was charged Monday with first-degree larceny. Police say she stole more than $23,000 from the fund at Killingly Central School over a four-year period when she was an administrative secretary.

Troopers say Flerra told investigators she used the money to pay her mortgage while trying to prevent foreclosure of her home. Police say she also used the money to pay other household bills and to buy necessities for her children and grandchildren.

Flerra did not enter a plea in Danielson Superior Court on Monday. No one answered the phone at her home Tuesday morning.
