A Copy of the Emancipation Proclamation
When Abraham Lincoln signed the famed Emancipation Proclamation into law in 1863, he also signed 48 copies of the document and sold them for fund-raising purposes. Understandably, these autographed papers fetch an enormous sum whenever they resurface. In June 2012, for instance, Robert Siegel Auction Galleries vended one such copy for $2.1 million to an anonymous American buyer. Even that sum is dwarfed by earlier purchases, including a copy owned by Robert Kennedy that sold for $3.8 million.
