( Photo courtesy of CollectionOf / August 15, 2012 ) James Naismith, inventor of basketball, left behind something of a secret: a typewritten, two-page, 120-year-old manuscript which details Naismith's original 13 rules for the sport. After spending more than a century lying idle in a desk drawer, the precious pages were eventually found and wound up on a Sotheby's auction in 2010, where they were sold to Naismith enthusiast David Booth for an unprecedented $4.3 million, a higher amount than any other item on this slideshow. |
