1) Black-eyed Sally's BBQ & Blues
In the last three years, Black-Eyed Sally’s has stepped up its jazz offerings. “We were mostly known for blues before that,” said owner James Varano. “Then we hooked up with Hartford Jazz Society and the Hartt School. Every Monday night we have a jazz jam, and three out of the four of those every month are free.” Sally’s usually hosts a featured jazz act at 8 p.m. who will play for an hour or so, after which the evening will turn in to a full-blown jam session, with some of the best local jazzers turning up to blow. “We see a lot of Hartt students and professors and people from the community as well,” Varano said. “They were looking for a place to play, and blues and jazz go well together. I've always wanted to do more jazz, so it's been a nice relationship.”
