A leader of an Amish community in rural eastern Ohio was convicted of federal hate crimes Thursday for orchestrating the forcible cutting of Amish men's beards and Amish women's hair, a spokeswoman for U.S. District Court in Cleveland said.

Sam Mullet Sr. and 15 of his followers also were found guilty of conspiracy in connection with the attacks on several fellow Amish people, court spokeswoman Vicky Mizell said.

The verdicts came after several days of jury deliberation. The trial for the 16 defendants started in late August and ended last week.
