BSU, Purdue, Indiana sign new recruits

UNDATED (AP) - Purdue hopes more than a dozen Florida recruits will rebuild its program. Indiana is banking on more than a half-dozen homegrown recruits.

And Ball State believes a second straight bowl trip helped attract enough talent to build on its recent success. Whatever the rationale, the three Indiana schools believe they filled enough holes during today's national football signing day to improve next season.

New Purdue coach Danny Hope says he likes the Boilermakers' recruits' athleticism and competitiveness, and he's pleased with his first recruiting class since he took over for former coach Joe Tiller.

Fourteen of his 20 signees are from Florida.

Indiana coach Bill Lynch signed 18 players, eight from Indiana. They include Dusty Kiel, the Columbus East quarterback and nephew of former Notre Dame and Colts quarterback Blair Kiel. Lynch also got Mr. Football runnerup Nick Zachery of Sheridan.

Ball State went for speed, and new coach Stan Parrish thinks he's got that in his 22-man class. The Cardinals' biggest void next season will be replacing quarterback Nate Davis, who declared early for the NFL draft last month. Parrish signed one quarterback, Aaron Mershman of Bowling Green, Ohio.
