Butler University students spent Friday morning sprucing up a near south side neighborhood.

Ninety students joined community volunteers from the Fuller Center for Housing to pick up trash and pull weeds near Saint Paul Street.

The volunteers tackled several streets and two alley ways. They were even helped out by the venerable Butler mascot, Blue II.

Classes haven't even started for these students but they said volunteering is part of "The Butler Way."

"This week is extremely important in driving home the principles of service and leadership for freshman and hopefully for them to continue throughout their college career and their lives,” said Katie Scheer, co-coordinator of Ambassadors of Change.

Over the past four years, the fuller center has helped construct and renovate several homes in the fountain square neighborhood.
