Local t-shirt company bringing holiday cheer with ugly sweater tees

The holiday spirit makes it from the tree to some people’s clothes. A local designer is turning normally tacky Christmas gear into hip holiday wear.

Ugly Christmas sweaters are the hip theme for holiday parties. The uglier the better. Two years ago, Jared Ingold made his version of the ugly Christmas sweater, “We just did it for fun.”

Ingold owns Art Press, which at the time was operated out of his garage. He made the ugly Christmas sweater tshirts for a holiday party with friends. His friends wore them and people started asking how to get them.

Ingold says, “Everyone loved them and thought they were a cool idea.”

The idea quickly took off getting mentions on blogs across the country and getting Ingold customers from around the world. The shirts go for about $20 each. Every shirt is hand-pressed. Each color is applied separately. The funny idea for friends two years ago, now has five different designs being mailed out everyday internationally, “We're growing. It's a lot of fun.”

The business is no longer in Ingold’s garage, “Definitely kind of stayed in my garage too long.”

Art Press has now moved into a bigger space on the city’s east side. The tshirts fall under his branded line, Vangarden.

Ingold says, “Obviously we were a little lucky, but it doesn't come without a lot of work. It's a lot  of late hours and trying different things and having fun at the same time. Keeps us motivated to keep doing things.”
