A man is dead after a fire destroyed his Morgan County home.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 200 block of Center Drive around 2:40 a.m. Thursday, which is located south of Mooresville along State Road 67.

When firefighters arrived, they reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the home.

During a primary search of the home, firefighters found Robert Allen, Jr., 63, close to the front door.

He was pulled from the home and rescue workers attempted CPR; however, fire officials said Allen succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Extra companies were called to assist the standard response due to work on a local water tower.

"We had set up a tanker task force and pulled tankers from different fire departments, so we had roughly 16,000 gallons of water here on the initial response," said Tim Medsker with the Mooresville Fire Department.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday to determine the exact cause of death.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
