ABC Employs a 'Fixer'

ABC has ordered a pilot script called "The Fixer" that was inspired in part by Jodie Foster's character in the movie "Inside Man."

That film's writer, Russell Gewirtz, is penning the pilot, to which ABC has given a script commitment, with a penalty if it doesn't go beyond that, the showbiz trade papers report. He'll also serve as an executive producer with Daniel Rosenberg and Imagine TV's Brian Grazer and David Nevins. Imagine's movie division produced "Inside Man."

"The Fixer" will focus on a powerful woman who quietly handles problems for New York's elite. Though Gewirtz is expanding on research he did for Foster's role in "Inside Man," he's creating a different character. The pilot won't be connected to the movie.

Gewirtz does, however, still have his head in the world he created for "Inside Man" -- he's working on a sequel to the Spike Lee-directed film, which also starred Denzel Washington and Clive Owen.

His credits also include ABC's short-lived series "Blind Justice" and several feature projects in development, including "Righteous Kill," a crime drama starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino that's due for release next year.
