'As the World Turns' Actor Commits Suicide

Soap actor Benjamin Hendrickson died last week after shooting himself.

According to published reports, police officers found the "As the World Turns" star's body in his bed in his Long Island home on Monday, July 3 with a gunshot wound to the head. He was 55.

Hendrickson, who attended the Julliard School of drama, is best known for playing the soap's Chief of Detectives Hal Munson. The character has been seen recently in scenes in which his daughter is dying. Hendrickson's supporting role won him a Daytime Emmy in 2003, the same year his mother died of cancer. Some speculate that his resulting depression contributed to his suicide.

There's no word if a note was left.

Hendrickson's last episode will air on Wednesday, July 12.

His other credits include roles on "Guiding Light," "Another World" and "Law & Order." On the big screen he's appeared in "Russkies," "Regarding Henry" and "Spanking the Monkey."
