The sound of kids whooping it up in a pool fills the air. Carnie Wilson asks someone to watch her daughters so she can talk.

A member of the singing trio Wilson Phillips, a cookbook author and recently featured in "The Bridesmaids," Wilson remains open to new experiences. The latest, as judge on ABC's "Karaoke Battle USA," is a natural fit.

She and her husband used to sing karaoke to "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and she recently bought a karaoke machine.

"I have always loved critiquing and being a judge for this kind of thing," she says. "I have a very sensitive ear."

Wilson is encouraging but won't coddle those who can't sing. By the time contestants reach this level, after rounds of vetting, they should be pretty decent singers.

"I critique every little thing," she says. "I am definitely the most sensitive pitchwise, and singingwise, and I am really on top of it. It is hard for the contestants to take the criticism."

Wilson Phillips is in the midst of making another record. Its three members are covering their parents' music for the first time; Wilson and her sister, Wendy, are daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and their band mate is Chynna Phillips, daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas.

It's tough for the women of Wilson Phillips to tour because they have nine children among them. Her girls are Wilson's main focus.

"My largest and most meaningful goal is to raise these children, with my husband, to be happy, healthy and thriving human beings, which they are," she says. "And to be of service in the world in some way, and that they have passion in their lives so that they can choose to do something that makes them happy."

Favorite books: "Since I have kids, I stopped reading altogether. One book, 'She's Come Undone.' 'Brothers: A Novel' by Da Chen is a great book. I wrote to the author and said, 'Your book really had an effect on me.' "

Favorite movies: " 'Mrs. Doubtfire,' 'Liar Liar,' 'Young Frankenstein,' 'Arthur' and 'Mommie Dearest.' "

Favorite music: "Heart, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, Sade, the Eagles, Earth, Wind & Fire, and B-52s."
