Silent film star Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle ran into trouble while partying over Labor Day weekend in San Francisco. Maude Delmont, who was known for blackmailing celebrities, accused him of raping a young actress named Virginia Rappe in his hotel room. Rappe died a few days later of a ruptured bladder, but doctors reported no signs of rape. Arbuckle claimed innocence, but he was arrested and charged with rape and manslaughter. His trial was turned into a three-ring media circus, fueled by the Hearst papers' sensationalized stories. After two mistrials, he was found not guilty, but his career never recovered.
