Cameron Diaz will take the lead in the box, a twisty supernatural thriller from Richard Kelly.

The project is based on the Richard Matheson short story "Button, Button," which focuses on an unhappily married couple who are visited by a mysterious stranger. The stranger gives them a mysterious box with a button. If they push the button, they'll get great wealth, albeit with a catch -- when they push the button, somebody they don't know will die.

Matheson's story was previously adapted as an installment of the 1980s revival of the "Twilight Zone" franchise.

Kelly adapted the film, which would be his first since the still unreleased "Southland Tales," the follow-up to the cult favorite "Donnie Darko."

Diaz will play the wife, with the husband yet to be cast.

According to the industry trade papers, Media Rights Capital is bankrolling the $30 million feature. The plan is to aim for a PG-13 rating.

You can currently hear Diaz reprising her role as Princess Fiona in "Shrek the Third." Last seen in "In Her Shoes" and "The Holiday," Diaz is set to co-star with Ashton Kutcher in "What Happens in Vegas..."
